  1. Ena Block

There isn’t an athlete that can’t benefit extensively from a few minutes at a time with a jump rope. It awakens, and primes, all of your muscles for activation and coordination, under the manageable resistance of your body weight. Good for your motion, locomotion, timing, neuromuscular junction and your brain. Maybe only the “tib bar” is a more essential piece of “simple” equipment with such huge dividends for optimization, performance and injury prevention.Ironically, I’d gotten away from jumping, because I didn’t have adequate clearance anywhere in my apartment and didn’t want to use my good speed rope outside. Well, I’ve got space now and this rope inspired me to figure that out.First impressions: getting this set up was so easy! The push grip design of the handle is actually genius. Push the cable in till it’s short enough, and you can do it while standing there ready for jumping. No tools required. Pulling it out is easy too. I still had to cut my cable for the optimal length (but that means much taller speedsters can get clearance too – I’m 6’1.5″ with long arms).I have had an RPM rope for many years. It was ahead of its time and really expensive for a jump rope, but a refined piece of equipment that can actually help you jump quicker and with more control, ultimately allowing you to improve your technique and your brain’s activation of your body more quickly. In testing this rope, I was so impressed, I had to pull out my RPM to compare in real time. This rope is so smooth. Silky smooth. But the handles feel like well machined speed devices. Sleek, but just the right heft and length in my hand (L/XL about 8.5″ around the knuckles, 8.75″ base of palm to middle finger tip). Hand positioning is very subjective. Some people like to hold it long (and loose), pinch tight, or choke up. Depends on feel. I thought the RPM handle was shorter and feels a little lighter, but it’s actually not. It has the rotating head that makes it look shorter, and the RPM has no end caps. You can remove the caps on the EXERBELL without changing functionality, so some jumpers may prefer that feathery light feel. The turning motion of this centered cable makes for a very similar rotation speed, and an equally good feel.Given the enormous difference in price – $25 vs $60+ I couldn’t justify buying something more expensive until you simply outpace this rope and are squeezing every millisecond out of your attempted rotations, for double/triple unders or some other professional/ elite level training modality. There are similar and knock off versions of the RPM, and this style of rope as well. If you’re pinching pennies they might be worthwhile, but this exerbell is a winner and is going to be my go to for now, without question. It’s a really great speed rope.
